Happy House of the Dragon month! Some might say August is relatively quiet for streaming, but we think the platforms have just cleared out space for the August 21 premiere of the Game of Thrones prequel. In the meantime, we’ve got some awards-bait movies to stream, two soccer-themed docuseries, the return of one of 2021’s best new shows, and multiple ’90s reboots.

Clusterf**k: Woodstock ’99
Release date: August 3
Where: Netflix
This isn’t the first documentary about the ill-fated concert that has come to represent the worst of toxic masculinity in the 1990s (with dotted lines to what it hath wrought a couple decades later), but with interviews with artists like Jewel and Fatboy Slim, along with insider footage, it will look to shed more light on “the societal, cultural and economic triggers that led to the festival descending into a total clusterfuck” (in the words of its producer).
Prey
Release date: August 5
Where: Hulu
This prequel film to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s legendary Predator franchise is set 300 years ago in the Comanche Nation. Star Amber Midthunder has drawn raves for her performance as a brave warrior trying to keep her tribe safe from an unseen enemy. The other thing consistently mentioned in the glowing reviews? The movie’s high level of gore.
Thirteen Lives
Release date: August 5
Where: Amazon Prime Video
We haven’t heard much about this film but it’s got tremendous star power—it’s directed by Ron Howard and stars Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell—and depicts the incredible true story of the Thai boys’ soccer team that was rescued from a cave in 2018. The movie has earned some fantastic early reviews but ended up skipping theaters and going straight to streaming when Amazon acquired MGM earlier this year.
Day Shift
Release date: August 12
Where: Netflix
This comedy seems like perfect “dog days of August” summer fare: Jamie Foxx plays a supposed pool cleaner who moonlights as a vampire hunter to cover his son’s expensive tuition and need for braces. Co-stars include Snoop Dogg, Dave Franco, and Meagan Good.
The Princess
Release date: August 13
Where: HBO Max
Not to be confused with the Hulu movie of the same name, this documentary was timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s untimely death. With direction from Academy Award nominee Ed Perkins, the film tells the extraordinary story of Diana’s life using only contemporaneous archival audio and video footage.
New limited series and TV shows
Industry Season 2
Release date: August 2
Where: HBO Max
If you want to feel old, and sober, we highly suggest checking out this uber-intense drama series about hard-charging investment bankers in London. Myha’la Herrold is riveting as the calculating young banker Harper Stern, Ken Leung is equally compelling as her shifty boss, and Jay Duplass will join the cast this season, playing against type as a hedge fund manager.
Reservation Dogs Season 2
Release date: August 3
Where: FX / Hulu
This brilliantly original series from Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi about a group of restless teens on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma returns less than a year after its premiere. With an almost entirely indigenous cast and writing staff (we did appreciate Bill Burr’s sensitive guest turn), the series masterfully combined humor, surrealism, and coming-of-age themes while depicting a little-before-seen slice of Americana. We can’t wait to see what it does next.
All or Nothing: Arsenal
Release date: August 4
Where: Amazon Prime Video
In this latest installment of Amazon’s comprehensive sports doc series, Premier League fans can watch London squad Arsenal attempt to return to its early-aughts glory. As ever, the series follows the team across an entire season (in this case the 2021-22 EPL campaign), and features extensive interviews with players and Manager Mikel Arteta.
Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-head
Release date: August 4
Where: Paramount+
Heh, heh, heh. The ’90s renaissance continues with a streaming reboot of the classic MTV animated series about two incredibly dumb metalhead teenagers. But as with any Mike Judge production (Office Space, Silicon Valley) expect to find more insight and satire than what appears on the surface. The series has already been renewed for a second season, too.
The Sandman
Release date: August 5
Where: Netflix
Author Neil Gaiman’s DC Comics series has finally been brought to life after years of development woes. Tom Sturridge stars as Morpheus, Lord of Dreams, who has just escaped captives that were really after his sister, Death (played here by Kirby Howell-Baptiste). The sprawling 10-episode series—which also counts Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Mark Hamill, Boyd Holbrook, and Patton Oswalt among its cast—is said to vary in both tone and genre.
I Am Groot
Release date: August 10
Where: Disney Plus
Five animated shorts comprise this delightful-looking series about Vin Diesel’s unlikely fan favorite character from Guardians of the Galaxy. Here, the series follows Groot’s adventures as a baby tree.
A League of Their Own
Release date: August 12
Where: Amazon Prime Video
Inspired by the classic ’90s film (“There’s no crying in baseball!”) about women’s professional baseball players in the 1940s, this eight-episode series looks like it will have a more modern sensibility by also taking into account the African-American experience in the wartime United States. It also has the potential to be even funnier than the movie, with a stellar cast featuring series creator Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), and Gbemisola Ikumelo (Sex Education). Rosie O’Donnell, who starred in the original movie, will also have a recurring guest role (try to spot her in the trailer!).
Never Have I Ever Season 3
Release date: August 12
Where: Netflix
Mindy Kaling’s fun coming-of-age series returns for a third season, in which central character Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) finally gets together with her dream crush Paxton (Darren Barnet). We suspect things will not go smoothly, but there should be plenty of laughs and relatable cringe moments in the process.
Tales of the Walking Dead
Release date: August 14
Where: AMC+
The latest spinoff in the Walking Dead zombie franchise will take more of an anthology approach, with each of six standalone episodes featuring different characters and varying tones (although some familiar faces are slated to return). Terry Crews, Anthony Edwards, Poppy Liu, and Parker Posey are just some of the actors who will appear. The first two episodes will drop simultaneously on AMC+.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Philippines
Release date: August 17
Where: Discovery Plus
Fan favorite Jiggly Caliente will now serve as a judge in the latest entrant to the Drag Race franchise. TV personality KaladKaren and host Paolo Ballesteros will also star. The series is airing on Discovery+ and HBO Go in the Philippines, and elsewhere on WOW Presents Plus. And if you can’t get enough Drag Race, Season 2 of Drag Race Down Under just premiered on July 30 and is streaming for free on both TVNZ in New Zealand and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
Release date: August 18
Where: Disney Plus
Following on the strong performance of Ms. Marvel, the next Marvel series on Disney+ continues the girl-power theme with Emmy-winner Tatiana Maslany in the title role. The 10-episode legal dramedy (you can’t make this stuff up) follows a trial lawyer who inherits a milder version of The Incredible Hulk’s powers (namely, turning green and huge) when she receives a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner. Mark Ruffalo reprises his role from the MCU films, while Renée Elise Goldsberry and Jameela Jamil also star.
House of the Dragon
Release date: August 21
Where: HBO Max
This Game of Thrones prequel—set about 200 years before the events of the original series—focuses on the powerful House Targaryen and the legendary civil war known as “The Dance of the Dragons” depicted in George R.R. Martin’s spin-off book, Fire & Blood. HBO has doubled down on some of the most popular features of the original series, with an astounding 17 dragons planned to appear on screen in what should surely be some epic fight scenes. The series is also helmed by director Miguel Sapochnik, who was behind all-time GoT episodes like “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards.”
Welcome to Wrexham
Release date: August 24
Where: FX / Hulu
In what’s been described as a real-life Ted Lasso situation, American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney teamed up to buy the low-level Red Dragons soccer team in the Welsh town of Wrexham in 2020. Across five episodes (with a second season already ordered), this documentary series will see if they can bring some much-needed star power (and laughs) to a struggling town.
Mike
Release date: August 24
Where: Hulu
The team behind I, Tonya courts controversy (and plays with reality) once again in this eight-episode series about the rollercoaster life of boxer Mike Tyson. As with Hulu’s Pam & Tommy series, Tyson did not actually participate in the production, and has spoken out against it. Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) stars as the adult Tyson, with Harvey Keitel playing his coach Cus D’Amato and Russell Hornsby as the one and only Don King. Two episodes will air each week.
The Patient
Release date: August 30
Where: Hulu
Steve Carrell moves well past his comedy roots in this psychological thriller from Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who co-created the critically acclaimed spy thriller The Americans. Carell will play a psychotherapist held captive by a serial killer patient (Domhnall Gleeson) who is desperate to be cured. The series will span ten 30-minute episodes in all, with the first three dropping simultaneously (we assume to suck us in).
Sports events to stream in August
Rugby takes center stage when the New Zealand All Blacks and South Africa Springboks face off for a series of matches in early August. While F1 takes most of the month off, MotoGP will feature the British and Austrian Grand Prix, and elsewhere in Europe the Vuelta a Espana kicks off August 19. In the United States, golf’s PGA Championship begins August 16, while the month finishes strong with both the U.S. Open tennis tournament and the start of the college football season.
What’s streaming in September 2022?
America’s favorite TV show, the NFL, kicks off its new season on September 8, while elsewhere we can look forward to a Quantum Leap reboot, the new season of Handmaid’s Tale, a pizza-themed baking competition show called Best in Dough, and Amazon’s much-ballyhooed Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power (premiering September 2). Disney+ will also bookend the month with a live-action Pinocchio remake and the highly-anticipated (by geriatric millennials, anyway) Hocus Pocus 2, while its latest Star Wars series, Andor, arrives September 21.

What is a VPN?
Comments
The device groups feature is not working and support are not helping!
Could you please describe the problem and what device you’re trying to use it on?
The big media corporations’ films are all very well, but what if the small distributors refuse to accept VPNs? I’ve come across this, apparently because the distribution could be to the wrong country, even although the payment is clearly from the country where the distribution is allowed. (Even the BBC – finally – has conceded that VPNs should be allowed for the iPlayer.) Is there any way of persuading the likes of Glasgow Film Theatre that VPNs are now the norm for any security-conscious customer online?

How do I get SLING tV to watch the Miss America Pageant on Friday Sept 10?
Hi Doragene, apologies for missing this until just now, but you can find all the info about signing up for Sling here: https://www.expressvpn.com/vpn-service/sling-vpn
If you need more, just live chat our 24/7 Support team! Good luck!
I find it interesting that the author includes streaming selections from Amazon Prime Video. I wonder if the author has actually tried streaming any programs on APV with his VPN connected. Because I have, and APV requires that you disconnect your VPN or proxy server before it will allow access. Yet another reason to cancel Amazon, IMHO.
ExpressVPN works with Amazon Prime Video. Please contact Support if you’re having issues.
Confirmed that I do indeed stream Amazon Prime Video through my Apple TV. They’ve got some great kids’ content!
Hi I want to get on to the Joe Rogan podcast
It would be cool if we could see the imdb rating alongside each title
I really think so. You’re correct.
I will I agree with you, I think the Imdb ratings should be duly indicated.
